Chapters in my book

I've been asked many times to write a book about the Hill technique as I've studied it and learned it. Well,  this blog is it.  A virtual book that can be saved to a hard drive, snapshotted to refer to later, or reread countless times just as chapters in a book would be. So please, reread the old posts from the beginning, don't just cherry pick the new ones and make comments as necessary.  Input feeds new blog post material as it concerns the Hill style of shooting and tackle. As I've said before, techniques can be so much a part of the way it's done, that the why's and how's get forgotten to say in the teaching.  Certain questions or input can jog the memory or stimulate a better way of saying something.

So this is a book that keeps going... Read on and remember to...

   Shoot Straight.

  2. Perfect! I've read all of them, and reread them regularly.
Best kind of book, because it's portable!
Happy 2025 Nate, here's to another great year of inspiring thoughts.

  3. Nate- do you have iny information on Howards/Johns actual hunting techniques/camping stuff-- other than the stuff in the books- they seemed very minimalist- just Bow,Quiver and knife kinda fellas ?

I know the book stuff can be kinda written to sell books -wondering if you had any knowledge of their actual doings-dosent seem like they did a lot of sitting and waiting?

  4. John told me that hunting was a simple affair, as well as hunting camp. He said Hill wanted things relaxed and simple. I've not seen any sign of hunting packs or whatnot with Hill, and Schulz also kept it simple. Hill didn't even carry water or a hunting knife. He used a simple stockman knife to do his dressing and skinning. They would hunt mornings and evenings, returning to the truck or camp at mid-day so didn't need to carry a pack with gear.

    2. Thanks Nate. I have wondered that myself about what they would carry with them. They never seem to have much on them in the pictures or videos.
It seems every time I go out for a hunt I take a little less with me. If I'm just targeting small game, all I'll take is my quiver, my phone, and a pocket knife. When I went out for deer this year, I would add a small headlamp to my quiver if I was going to be out until sunset. I'm getting tired of carrying all kinds of things I don't need or even use.
In my truck, I keep lots of water and snacks, some extra cloths, and a bag with some basic tools. Aside from the food and water or a clean pair of socks, I hardly touch any of it.
I tried to make it this year so I could just grab my quiver and bow and head into the woods and just enjoy the hunt. It's easier to find the motivation to get out, especially for a short hunt, when things are simple like that.
